Long before Miranda Lambert was in People Magazine with photos of her Airstream Trailer named Wanda, even before Matthew McConaughey and his Airstream started popping up all over the Internet, Sugar and I had an Airstream parked in our backyard. Occasionally, we’d spend a weekend, less frequently a week or two, by a lake or the ocean. I loved that silver tube.
Lately, all the tiny houses on TV and the Internet leave me thinking about how simple life in an Airstream was. Of course, I never lived in one for long. But the prospect has its allure. Downsize. Simplify. Travel. Breathe. Maybe have a piece of land near family where we can park when we aren’t traveling–like a docking station.
I know, I know…I’m not a low maintenance woman by anyone’s standard. I can’t explain exactly why this idea has captured my imagination. Sugar worries most about my closet requirements. I would definitely have to donate a few (cough, thousand, cough) things.
A big part of this fantasy for me is spending more time with Sugar. In my visions, he is retired, or at least working remotely from wherever we happen to be. And here’s my worry. While I want him with me (instead of traveling elsewhere every week) I have to be in isolation to write. And I plan to write for many more years. So we’d need a separate space for him to work or play. I’m still figuring out how all of this might work. Right now it’s just a pleasant fantasy.
What about y’all? Would you want to live in an Airstream? Travel?
I can hear Miranda lambert’s Airstream Song playing in my head.
I realize this post was sometime back. But I just found it. So I thought I’d share my Airstream story with you.
I was born in the early 50’s. My parents rodeo-ed for a living, and we had an Airstream. Yup, my first 5 years I lived in one, going from state to state. All over the the country. Well, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North & South Carolina, Tennessee. We even made it to Illinois, Florida, and Missouri. They pulled that sucker with an old Lincoln car. Everywhere.
Back then, rodeo was almost like the circus. They would travel from city to city, stay a couple of days, or week, and then move to the next town or state.
You might think I don’t have strong memories of that time in my life, but I do. Most times, when traveling, I rode in the car with my parents. But I can remember those occasions when dad drove, and mom & I stayed in the Airstream. I can still feel the rocking!!
Cyd, this sounds amazing–so exciting! I can only imagine how riding in the trailer would feel–I never did that. But I bet it was fun. What fabulous memories you must have!
